The Spring Trench Coat

We’re entering into that rather odd time of year, the transition between the seasons, otherwise known as the sartorial blind spot.  Enter the Trench Coat.  A trench has been my go-to piece of outerwear for this non-season season for as long as I can remember.  But of course being British the ability to pull of a trench is programmed into my genes, it’s a part of our heritage as we lay claim to it’s invention.  For most the dream is a Burberry trench; iconic, well made (in Britain of course), practical…but sadly not for me.  I bought my husband a Burberry trench for Christmas and along with the sterling service I received when purchasing said coat I completely understand why they are worth the high end price tag.  For me though the Burberry trench is just a little too perfect, it sets the standard for the whole outfit which must also be perfect and I’m not the sort of human that can stand that sort of pressure.

Completely betraying the British (gulp), today I’ve opted for this slinky navy trench by Scandi label Gestuz (High Street alternatives listed at the bottom of the post).  The fabric is fluid, not stiff and structured and so suits me and my lifestyle perfectly.  Yes, it creases like a bitch if you sit down but that’s a small price to pay for a piece with so much movement, and didn’t I say I wasn’t going for the perfect, pristine qualities of a Burberry? Yes I did.

Hiding beneath this amazing trench lies my standard shirt/jeans combo.  I find myself opting for a straight leg denim these days over any other fit and I’ve found the perfect pair at Topshop.  Much to my delight they didn’t just stop at creating one pair, there are 3 shades/washes (and also Petite & Tall sizes) to choose from, or collect as it may be in my case.  Now I hate to be the bearer of bad denim news but sadly Topshop have failed to see the popularity of this new (but not so new) shape of jeans and so far I have only found them stocked in the larger city stores (Westfield, Oxford Circus).  Online shopping will be your saviour in this case guys!
